Welcome 2015

Well how embarrassed am I? I have come on to put up a blog as I feel that I should and realise it has been since Halloween since I last put up a post! That was 3 months ago! I feel terrible. Where did the time go?

I have been enjoying the summer school holidays and spending lots of time with the kids around the home. We are slowly continuing our renovations working on bedroom number 3. We also set a little project of creating a new vegetable patch from scratch using found objects around our very overgrown garden and through Gumtree. We joined the Diggers Club and have been to Heronswood here on the Peninsula a couple of times as well to learn how to grow heirloom vegetables.

So why else have I not been posting on my website? Well these include but not limited to my recent addiction to the instant nature of Facebook. It is so easy to just grab an iPad, take a shot and upload to Facebook in a matter of seconds to the 250+ people who see my feeds. If you would like to see our Facebook page please go to Cut the Chemicals Cookbook and see what has been so distracting there.

Also I have been busy Pinning lots of ideas on our Pinterest Page, I absolutely love this resource and think it's a great tool for collecting lots of ideas about living the additive free lifestyle. If you know of anything that I should Pin for others let me know. I'd be happy to do so.

Also I think I have had a little bit of writers block of late. I've been trying to think of long, highly detailed and informative posts that can teach you many things, but I think that I am really over thinking things.  I think what you would want to read are little tidbits here and there that give good advice on eating foods that really do put us in a better place mentally and physically. So that is what I am going to endeavor to do, blog little, but blog often!

Rebecca :)

The Switch Witch!

Last year I hadn't long started this blog before Halloween and I honestly cannot believe that it has been a whole year gone and I am again musing over Halloween! Where did the time go?

Last year I wrote about some other ways that you can cut the chemicals at Halloween by handing out alternatives at the door. Things like stickers and glow sticks. You can see my past blogs here:

Happy Halloween

What I'm Handing Out Tonight For Halloween

This year I found some cute little witch stickers that I will be handing out and I will be also giving out lollies from my grocery store - I think the neighbors will thank me! I also found online this cute little idea, that possibly would be quite new to us Australians. It's called the Switch Witch and this is the little rhyme. I think you get the picture.

Have you heard of the Switch Witch,
who loves Halloween?
She comes for the leftover candy
after trick-or-treating!

She's the nicest - but sneakiest
witch of her kind,
she swipes up candies and sweets
and leaves presents behind!

She swoops from doorstep to doorstep
on a long violet broom
her black cat rides on the back
since there's plenty of room.

She keeps all her magic
in her tall skinny hat.
She trades you - and then
she flies off! Just like that!

So take your leftover candy
set it out by the door
and in the morning you'll find
what she traded you for!

Cutting Chemicals Isn't Just for the Kids.

I recently read a blog post from Food Babe about her campaign to expose the ingredients in a popular Autumn/Fall beverage. Her contention was that the drink in question, A Spiced Pumpkin Latte was full of everything but surprise ... pumpkin! Furthermore, it contained cancer causing chemicals in it's flavorings.

This got me thinking about what us adults consume on a daily basis. Starbucks and their lattes are clearly marketed towards adults and although we all don't go around drinking Starbucks everyday we do consume an alarmingly high percentage of our foods from fast food convenient outlets or from pre-packaged goods.

So, have you ever thought what this could be doing to you? For instance, have you ever woke up one morning after a very sound sleep but felt like you had the hangover headache from hell? Feeling a little nauseous as well? Think back to the night before, you didn't consume one drop of alcohol, but you did get stuck into the lollies and chocolate in front of the tv after the kids were finally put to bed. All those chemically laden, colored goodies, swimming around in the blood stream aren't going to be consumed quietly.

This happens to children too when they consume too many sweets, but it accumulates more in their little bodies, so you can imagine why it is they are so grumpy and sick feeling.

What about when you grab that sneaky burger in the drive-thru on the way home from work?

Well according to this blog post 9 Scary-Sounding Chemicals Lurking in Your Fast Food there are many chemicals in your favorite fast foods that can cause reactions in adults that include (but not limited to) asthma, vomiting and diarrhea ... delicious!

Many foods that have a lot of additives and preservatives are often accompanied by high levels of sugar and salt as well. For example a jar of pre-made pasta sauce can easily have 1/2 a cup of salt. Furthermore it's often just a tomato paste (prepared and imported from an obscure overseas factory) mixed with water, a little dried herbs and dried garlic powder. No fresh herbs or whole tomatoes here and certainly not the best for your heart health.

As an alternative  make you own from a jar of Passata mixed with your own fresh herbs and garlic, quick, convenient and most importantly ...yum!

So, what else have I been doing besides toilet training, moving house and playgroup dates?

- I have re-booted the webpage to make it easier to navigate and learn all about living the additive and preservative free life.

- I have started a Guest Blog on Button Baby - read here for my article about not feeling guilty about buying pre-made Baby Foods,

Helpful Infographic on Food Additives

Nutrition Action have created a very helpful infographic that visually explains what additives we should be trying to avoid when purchasing foods at the supermarket. Pin it as a useful reference!

Is It the End for Moldy Bread?

Researchers have been working on novel ways to stop bread from going moldy without having to pump the bread full of nasty chemicals. One example that they used was tortilla flat breads, which I am personally interested in. We love to have soft taco's here in the Taylor house but it is very, very, very hard to find flat breads that have no nasty chemical's in the them. It would be awesome to buy them without the awful preservatives.

Click here read more about the revolutionary ideas in stopping bread from going moldy!

In the meantime if you looking for a good alternative to eat your Mexican wraps in try Mountain Bread Brands found both in Coles and Woolworths here in Australia.

Preservative Free Dried Fruit

7/8/2014

If you have my book, you'll note that a lot of recipes for kids snacks avoid using dried fruit. This is because a preservative is used in the drying process to avoid the fruit going mouldy. I confess I do however use coconut often in my biscuits as I do love that flavour.

When I run out of my current stocks I will be buying my next source of coconut from a lady who lives around the corner from me who sells dried fruits and coconut that are preservative free - yippee!

Lu's website is below, so if like me you would like to have chemical free dried fruit check out her site:
Six S Organics - Organic and Preservative Free Foods our food, cleaning, and body care products are organic, chemical free, and fair trade.

These two comedians made a spoof ad to tell you exactly what ingredients are in chicken nuggets sold at McDonald's Restaurants. It would be hilarious if it wasn't so scary!
